Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be affiliated with the Chamber?
The DNA’s affiliation with the Chamber provides significant cost savings for its operations through shared administrative support, governance, and access to an expert staff deeply involved in supporting Northampton. The finances of the DNA, however, will be entirely separate from the Chamber of Commerce, and the DNA will maintain a separate board of directors. These savings will be passed onto members, providing the opportunity to support the downtown business district at a greatly reduced cost versus other models.

What role does the City of Northampton play?
The City of Northampton has provided significant in-kind support to the DNA through the hiring of a full-time employee dedicated to the maintaining and cleaning the public properties in the downtown business district.

Where does the DNA get its funding?
The DNA is funded entirely through voluntary contributions and existing membership structures. Members of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce whose businesses are in downtown will pay an additional $100 if they are on the second floor of a building, and $200 if they are on the first floor of a building. Membership to the Chamber of Commerce is entirely voluntary and reflects a business’ investment in a vibrant and thriving environment. The DNA will also seek funding from businesses, property owners, residents and other stakeholders who share an interest in Northampton’s success.

Why should someone choose to support the DNA?
A thriving downtown benefits everyone. The more successful businesses and cultural organizations are, the more revenue there is to support Northampton’s continued growth. Property values go up, tourism increases and the city remains a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship and culture.
