Canary in the Coal Mine, Zea Mays Printmaking
Hosmer Gallery at Forbes Library, 20 West Street

Picture
"Evening Grosbeaks" by Leslie Moore
Did you know that North America has lost 30% of its bird species since the 1970s? That 2/3 of North American Birds face extinction from rising global temperatures? We called on printmakers to promote awareness of the vast numbers of avian species that are at risk due to climate change.

Artists were invited to select a bird from The Audubon Society’s list of 389 bird species currently threatened with extinction, and to create an edition of prints using an upcycled printing plate.

Canary in the Coal Mine is also a fundraiser for the Mass Audubon Arcadia Sanctuary, the National Audubon Society, and Zea Mays Printmaking’s Technical Research Program. Prints can be purchased here.

The Bearded Lady Project
Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley Street

Picture
The Bearded Lady Project confronts public stereotypes of scientists by celebrating inspirational, adventurous women who have dedicated their lives to paleontology, searching for clues about past life on Earth. These images harken back to the stylized photographs of male paleontologists in historical texts. The beard, a potent symbol of masculinity, is added to the women's portraits to highlight the inequities and prejudices that persist in the sciences. The Bearded Lady Project seeks to educate the public and inspire the same recognition and respect for women in the sciences that their male colleagues typically receive. The Project has been brought to the Valley from the Smithsonian by Northampton Open Media.
